Prelude à la Gershwin

Composition Date: December 2014
Duration: 3:13
First performance: A private setting in New York City, performed by pianist Nicholas Shaneyfelt
Public premiere: Britton Hall, University of Michigan, April 14, 2015 by pianist Deborah Grimmett

Written as a tribute to George Gershwin, this prelude contains some of the characteristics of his compositions, including the chromatic inner lines, syncopated rhythms, the melody and accompaniment texture, use of rhythmic diminution, dissonant grace notes, and repetition. It has not been my intention to imitate Gershwin, but rather to internalize some of the above elements, and present them in my own musical language.
