Emily Carr String Quartet – Beloved of the Sky – Sidney, BC

My dear friends at the Emily Carr String Quartet will be giving the world premiere of my string quartet, Beloved of the Sky. Inspired by the paintings of Emily Carr, the piece was written for the quartet. I started writing this piece in 2014 during a residency program at Art Spring on Salt Spring Island with the Emily Carr String Quartet.  Several other projects and a doctorate program at The University of Michigan ensued, which prevented me from dedicating enough time to finalize this project. In the meantime, JACK Quartet and The Calidore String Quartet also presented  workshops of the in-progress Beloved of the Sky at The University of Michigan.

I am happy to see this piece return home to Emily Carr String Quartet for its world premiere. Entitled “Different Trains: a tribute to the Kronos String Quartet.” The program includes: “Fratres” by Arvo Pärt, “Beloved the Sky” by Iman Habibi (World Premiere), “Four for Tango” by Astor Piazzolla, arrangements for string quartet by Osvaldo Golijov and Steve Reich’s “Different Trains.” There will be three performances. Admission is $25 for adults, free for students:

November 21st – 7:30pm – St. Mary of the Incarnation – Metchosin, BC
November 24th – 2:30pm – St. Paul’s United Church – Sidney, BC
November 26th – 7:30pm – St. John the Divine – Victoria, BC

Composer Residency at ArtSpring with the Emily Carr String Quartet

I am excited to be joining the Emily Carr String Quartet (ECSQ) on Salt Spring Island for a short residency position, during which I will be composing a string quartet commissioned for the ECSQ. The residency culminates with an informal presentation of the work-in-progress, featuring the Emily Carr Quartet, and myself. Read more about the event here

“Contemplative, melodic, and very beautiful” – Thank you Salt Spring Exchange for this article about the event:

And here is the wonderful Emily Carr Quartet in action. Needless to say, I very much look forward to hearing them perform my piece.
