Internationally celebrated American pianist Carolyn Enger has gained critical acclaim for her exquisite lyrical playing, as well as her deeply felt interpretations. In addition to an active performance schedule on two continents, including recent performances at The National Gallery Oslo, Baruch College, Kean University and Noontime Concerts in San Francisco; Ms. Enger has enjoyed remarkable success as a recording artist. The New York Times selected her Naxos recording of intimate Ned Rorem miniatures, Piano Album I & Six Friends, as one of the newspaper’s “Best In Classical Recordings”, writing “Among the 90th–birthday tributes this year to the essential American composer Ned Rorem, this recording especially stands out,” while Gramophone declared, “Enger raises the miniatures to a higher level.” Her upcoming recording based on her multimedia project Resonating Earth is set to release on Métier in September.

Album Release: New Jewish Music Vol. 4 Featuring Habibi’s Shāhīn-nāmeh

The Azrieli Foundation is pleased to announce the October 6th release of New Jewish Music, Vol. 4 – Azrieli Music Prizes on Analekta. The album features the world-premiere recordings of three prize-winning works by the 2022 Azrieli Music Prizes Laureates Iman Habibi (2022 Azrieli Commission for Jewish Music), Aharon Harlap (2022 Azrieli Prize for Jewish Music) and Rita Ueda (2022 Azrieli Commission for Canadian Music). These works are brought vividly to life by the Orchestre Métropolitain under the direction of Artistic Partner Nicolas Ellis.

Soprano Sharon Azrieli is featured as soloist in Harlap’s Out of the depths have I cried unto Thee, O Lord, a cycle of five psalms for soprano and orchestra. Habibi’s Shāhīn-nāmeh for voice and orchestra was written especially for Persian vocalist and setar player Sepideh Raissadat, who gives a masterful performance on this recording. The unique talents of shō player Naomi Sato and suona/sheng player Zhongxi Wu are featured extensively in Ueda’s unique Birds Calling… from the Canada in You.

Habibi’s Shāhīn-nāmeh is a song cycle for voice and orchestra based on 14th-century Judeo-Persian poetry by Shahin Shirazi. The work explores the connection between Persian heritage and Jewish culture, finding inspiration in Shirazi’s Ardashir-nāmah (The Book of Ardashir), especially the poems that comment on the tale of Queen Esther in connection to the mythical characters of the monumental 11th-century epic Shahnameh (The Book of Kings).

“This piece incorporates a Persian traditional singing style in the solo part against a backdrop of Western classical instruments,” says Habibi. “The result is an exciting, fresh sound and a marriage of many different cultural and musical languages. It is my hope that this new work can bring much-deserved attention to this little-known poetry but also show the close affinity that has existed historically between Persians and Jews dating back to sixth century B.C.”

Album Release: Deborah Grimmett’s Lineage: Tracing Influence

I am delighted to announce the release of Lineage: Tracing Influence, a debut album by my partner in life and music, Deborah Grimmett, which features the first ever recording of my Piano Sonata (Voyage). Written in 2013, Piano Sonata (Voyage) was commissioned by the Museum of Anthropology for the opening of their exhibition, Safar.

It is with great pleasure and excitement that I announce the release of my debut solo album, Lineage: Tracing Influence, on February 22, 2021, on New Classics Records. It is available now both as a digital and physical album on Bandcamp.

Lineage: Tracing Influence features premiere recordings of two works: Saoirdhréacht Gaedhealach (Gaelic Fantasy) by Rhoda Coghill, and Piano Sonata (Voyage) by Iranian-Canadian composer Iman Habibi, alongside works by Brahms, Debussy, and Respighi. In many ways, this album has been decades in the making, with the selected repertoire encompassing a tracing of both my own musical lineage, and that of the composers and their music. Kooch-e Khamân – Release of New Album by Del Sol String Quartet

Kooch-e Khamân, which includes a live performance recording of my string quartet, Revolution Street, performed by the incredible Del Sol String Quartet at the University of California, Irvine. The album also features music by Gity Razaz, Elnaz Seyedi, Niloufar Shiri, Nasim Khorassani, Hesam Abedini, and Adib Ghorbani. I am especially grateful to Del Sol String Quartet for their wonderful performance, and to Hesam Abedini for spearheading this project.

Roedde House Classical Series: Lyrichord

Join William George (tenor) and Stanton Jack (guitar) for an afternoon of songs with music inspired by the poetry of such luminaries as Rumi, Rilke, and Shakespeare. The concert will include one of my songs, False Morning for guitar and tenor, written to poetry by Omar Khayyam. It will also include music featured on East, a recently released album featuring performances by William George and Michael Strutt (guitar). East includes two of my songs, False Morning and The River-Lip.
