Elation Pauls and Paul Williamson Perform Habibi’s Offering of Water

Saskatoon-born violinist Elation Pauls presents music from her latest album SUSTENANCE with pianist Paul Williamson on March 1 for the Amati Concert Series!!

Discovering the Amatis is an annual concert series that gives you an opportunity to hear the beauty of 17th century rare instruments live.

The Amati String Instruments will be presented in a concert series featuring various musicians beginning in fall 2024 until spring 2025. The series has been curated by Dr. Véronique Mathieu (D.Mus), associate professor of Violin and the David L. Kaplan Chair in Music, a position made possible by a $2-million donation from USask alumni Xiaoping (Bob) Xu (MA’92, LLD’17) and Ling Chen (MA’90).

All concerts take place in Convocation Hall (PMB 120, 107 Administration Place) on the USask campus beginning at 3 PM.

What nourishes you? Us? Our planet? What happens when life necessities are absent? Food and water, song and play, community and solitude – get off the grid for a few hours and explore SUSTENANCE at its source. With support from Canada’s Council for the Arts Create and Explore program and SOCAN, violinist and guest curator Elation Pauls brings this banquet of sound to you in anticipation of her debut album to be released this fall on the SPEKTRAL label with renowned Canadian composer-pianists David Braid and Serouj Kradjian performing their own works. Including five Manitoban Premieres and one World Premiere, Canadian composers Carmen Braden, Cris Derksen, Iman Habibi and Kelly-Marie Murphy will also be featured on this evening of powerhouse works for solo violin and violin and piano duo.

About the program:

What sustains you? Us? Our planet? What happens when sustenance is absent? From the energy and joy that the interactive elements of play and dance ignite to themes of internal sustenance provided by the divine and more tangible elements of food and water, this program of premieres explores personal and collective sources.

SUSTENANCE marks a new life chapter born out of the days of isolation and silence of 2020. With the drastic and sudden all-encompassing change experienced, I was forced to spend much introspective time. Becoming disconsolate with the (lack of) societal contribution I was making as a violinist, I became invested in exploring new avenues for connection. With the encouragement of some close friends and colleagues, I imagined a program of 21st century Canadian music for violin and piano based on the theme of sustenance, with the intention to commission pieces from some of my favourite composers. In spring of 2023 I was awarded a Create and Explore grant from the Canada Council for the Arts and it is a great honour and privilege to work with the composers and pianists being presented today.
