Members of the Borromeo String Quartet with Raman Ramakrishnan Perform Relics

Our final musical summer concert on Sunday, August 23 at 5 PM will feature The Borromeo String Quartet, an acclaimed American ensemble, long recognized as one of the most important and innovtive string quartets of its generation. Named after the Borromean Islands in Italy, it was formed in 1989 at the Curtis Institute of Music by violinists Nicholas Kitchen and Ruggero Allifranchini, violist EnSik Choi, and cellist Yeesun Kim.

Since 1992, it has served as Ensemble-in-Residence at the New England Conservatory, with additional residencies at the Taos School of Music and Heifetz International Music Institute. Current members are Nicholas Kitchen and Kristopher Tong (violins), Melissa Reardon (viola), and Yeesun Kim (cello).

The Borromeo is celebrated for fresh interpretations of the classical canon and bold advocacy of 20th- and 21st-century music. It has won top prizes at the Evian International String Quartet Competition, Young Concert Artists Auditions, the Cleveland Quartet Award, Lincoln Center’s Avery Fisher Career Grant, and the Martin E. Segal Award. A technology pioneer, it was the first quartet to use laptops/iPads on stage and produce its own live recordings and videos. The ensemble performs worldwide, collaborates with leading artists and composers, and maintains a strong educational presence.
